Dr Gerard O’Shea Event - 2 May.

Dr. Gerard O’Shea’s talk on 2 May was inspirational. His book, “As I have loved you”, is a must read for every young parent or those interested in the sex education of their child. We admit to under promoting some valuable aspects of his program, not realising as did many who attended, just how ‘revolutionary’, comprehensively practical and Catholic, it was. Indeed we have already been contacted by some mothers who are prepared to fly Gerard up here again.

We heard how the evolution of his program had taken near 10 years and involved the best experts from around the world and then numerous focus groups. The real payoff was twofold. Firstly, parents had a wonderful opportunity (albeit for a short period of time) to deepen the relationship with their child, and at a time when the childs focus would otherwise move to those shallow and misguided sources of sex education, sources which rob them of their innocence and their sense of respect for all.

Secondly, the program opens up far more comprehensive and analytical thinking in many more areas than sex education, owing to the comprehensive framework in which the sex education program is centred. The lines of communication to many more lifestyle topics are opened up for future discussion and this incredibly valuable process was shown to continue well after the kids have ‘flown the nest’.

However we were also told that if healthy sex education is not presented to the child by the ages 14 - 15 then it is too late. Several of the AFE team have purchased the book so if you’d like to check it, please contact us or otherwise order the book online:

2009 - Year of Priests

On the eve of the Year for Priests, Pope Benedict wrote to his brother priests:

"'The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus', the saintly Curé of Ars would often say. This touching expression makes us reflect, first of all, with heartfelt gratitude on the immense gift which priests represent, not only for the Church, but also for humanity itself. I think of all those priests who quietly present Christ’s words and actions each day to the faithful and to the whole world, striving to be one with the Lord in their thoughts and their will, their sentiments and their style of life. How can I not pay tribute to their apostolic labours, their tireless and hidden service, their universal charity? And how can I not praise the courageous fidelity of so many priests who, even amid difficulties and incomprehension, remain faithful to their vocation as 'friends of Christ', whom he has called by name, chosen and sent?"

"Why going to Mass Matters" Wed 13 May 09. Sr. Ursula presented this event entitled "Why going to Mass Matters" on Wednesday 13th May at 7.15pm in the Daley Centre.

Lenten Program 2009 ...Daley Centre Tuesday 24 Feb and Tuesdays 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31March.
Parishioners attended the Lenten program presented mostly this year in small home groups. Some found it more convenient to attend the morning and evening sessions in the Daley Centre.
At least 100 parishioners used the program to prepare for the Easter season. Most parishioners found the prayer, reflection and Faith-sharing was very enjoyable and helpful, especially in the small groups.
